Visual Overture Magazine

Introducing Emerging Artists to Galleries, Curators, and Collectors

FAQ's

 What is Visual Overture Magazine?

Visual Overture Magazine is an art magazine dedicated to introducing new and emerging artists to galleries, curators, and collectors. We focus on those venues located in the Southern Atlantic region of Virginia, North Carolina, South Carolina, Georgia, and Florida, but have nationwide and international subscribers as well. Visual Overture is printed 4 times per year. To see an example of how the magazine looks, check out our photos.

 Who can submit?

Emerging professional artists living anywhere in the world may submit for publication consideration, as long as they meet all the requirements listed on the artists page.

What is an "emerging professional artist"?

An emerging professional artist is someone who is not currently enrolled in undergraduate courses, and is consistently seeking to build their career in a visual arts field. (Being enrolled in graduate studies is ok.)

 How do I submit?

Please go to the artists page and read all the requirements. We often have more than one competition available. When you're ready to submit to any of the competitions, click the "Ready to Submit" button at the bottom in order to begin the process. It will take about 20 minutes (may vary according to your internet speed).

Are sculptures and video art acceptable for submission?

Yes. Sculpture, metals, textiles, ceramics, photography, mixed media, painting, drawing, video art, digital art, printmaking, and installation art are all acceptable media for presentation in Visual Overture Magazine. The galleries in our distribution list are interested in some or all of these fields. If you have specific questions on how your artwork will be displayed in the magazine, please use the contact form.

Why don't you ask for an artist statement or resume for entry?

Our jury process does not require these materials. However, if you are accepted for publication you will be asked to submit those materials before publication, as well as respond to a few interview questions.

 What is the jury process?

Jurors are chosen based on their knowledge of contemporary emerging art. We rotate jurors regularly - some may be curators or critics, gallery directors, university professors, and/or highly respected artists. The jurying for selecting artists for publication is a "blind" process, meaning the name, age, background, and other personal information are hidden from the juror. Each juror will pick artists based solely on the artwork.

What if my work is not accepted?

If your work is not accepted, don't give up! We can only present 7 artists per issue, and competition is steep. If you are not accepted for the most recent issue, please try again in the future. Our juror changes regularly and you may have a better fit with a different juror. Also, you may want to take advantage of our affordable professional portfolio review services, which may improve the presentation of your work. (However, if your work has been accepted, then you will not be eligible for participation for one year after your acceptance. We want to keep it fresh!)

What kinds of galleries receive Visual Overture Magazine?

We have researched and developed a targeted listing of 200+ galleries in the Southern Atlantic region who are interested in displaying contemporary emerging talent. These galleries include commercial, non-profit, and alternative venues. In addition to those galleries on our free distribution list, many galleries and collectors located elsewhere in the United States receive Visual Overture through our subscription program. You can read more about this on our Galleries page.

Who can subscribe to Visual Overture Magazine?

Anyone may subscribe to Visual Overture Magazine! Galleries will find it useful in searching for fresh work. Collectors will love the opportunity of being the first to know of a new emerging artist. Curators may use it to design a new exhibition. Artists get inspired seeing others work and enjoy reading the helpful articles. So, you see, if you're involved in visual art in any way Visual Overture Magazine is for you!
